The Gifts of the Magi

The 3 Wisemen also known as Magi(greek) or kings went looking for the newborn king. These men had studied the prophets and planets and new that The star led them to the Messiah. And knowing that this little babe was the newborn king, they brought gifts to honor Him. A king born on the stable floor received the gift of gold. The best gift to give any king. Frankincense was a special essential oil that the high priest would use in ceremonies, suggesting that this babe was also our high priest. The high priest would give sacrifices for the people. This babe would sacrifice Himself for us. Frankincence was also used for healing.

Myrrh was used in embalming of the dead before burial and was a perfuming ointment. If these Wisemen had studied the prophets, they new this newborn king would someday die for us. Each gift was an expensive gift that could be sold to help Jesus parents take him to Egypt quickly since Herod was having all Jewish babies killed because he was afraid of this newborn king.

But lets look at these Wisemen again.
They followed a little light, the star.
They arrived at the wrong place.
They asked for more light.
They did not receive it from men but from God's word, the Bible.
They followed the additional light which they obtained from Micah 5:2.
They found the Lord in Bethlehem,
The star came; and it appeared that they had not lost any light
but kept all they previously had.
They worshiped Him and they returned another way!
The sought out the Lord!
The key verse for me is "...they fell down and worshiped him; and
opening their treasures, they offered unto him..."
That is what we are too do. Worship the King and give of ourselves
to him. Give Him our trust, service, gifts, our lives. In the end
we receive the gift of eternal life!

Matthew 2:1-12 NASB Bible
"Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judaea in the days of Herod
the King, behold, Wisemen came from the east to Jerusalem, saying,
Where is he that is born King of the Jews? for we saw his star in
the east, and are come to worship him. And when Herod the king heard
it, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him. And gathering together
all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them
where the Christ should be born. And they said unto him, In Bethlehem
of Judaea: for thus it is written through the prophet. And thou,
Bethlehem land of Judah, Art in no wise least among the princes of
Judah: For out of thee shall come forth a governor, Who shall be
shepherd of my people, Israel. Then Herod privily called the wise men,
and learned of them exactly what time the star appeared. And he sent
them to Bethlehem, and said, Go and search out exactly concerning the
young child; and when ye have found him, bring me word, that I also
may come and worship him. And they, having heard the king, went their
way; and lo, the star, which they saw in the east, went before them,
till it came and stood over where the young child was. And when they
saw the star, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy. And they came
into the house and saw the young child with Mary his mother; and they
fell down and worshiped him; and opening their treasures, they offered
unto him gifts, gold, and frankincense, and myrrh. And being warned
of God in a dream that they should not return to Herod, they departed
into their own country another way."

Do You Hear What I Hear

Said the night wind to the little lamb,
"Do you see what I see?
Way up in the sky, little lamb,
Do you see what I see?
A star, a star, dancing in the night
With a tail as big as a kite,
With a tail as big as a kite."

Said the little lamb to the shepherd boy,
"Do you hear what I hear?
Ringing through the sky, shepherd boy,
Do you hear what I hear?
A song, a song high above the trees
With a voice as big as the the sea,
With a voice as big as the the sea."

Said the shepherd boy to the mighty king,
"Do you know what I know?
In your palace warm, mighty king,
Do you know what I know?
A Child, a Child shivers in the cold--
Let us bring him silver and gold,
Let us bring him silver and gold."

Said the king to the people everywhere,
"Listen to what I say!
Pray for peace, people, everywhere,
Listen to what I say!
The Child, the Child sleeping in the night
He will bring us goodness and light,
He will bring us goodness and light."
