Since we did not go whale watching in Alaska, we decided to go to the San Juan Islands. Brent the Natualist on the ship said there were several resident pods off the SJ Islands. We were able to see "K" Pod which has around 20 members.
We arrived to check in at 7 am and out hotel made our reservation. There was pleny of room and the whole boat was filled. We had salmon, bagels and cream cheese and coffee for breakfast. First we went to Friday Harbor to drop off people. It was a 3 hour trip and we saw lots of birds on the way inclduing eagles.>
After we dropped the people off we headed northeast and we saw K Pod by the Stuart Islands. It was so exciting! According to the naturalist on the Cliiper, Raven(K28, 12yrs) gave birth to K39 about 3 weeks before. The orcas were in "sleep mode" So they did not jump out of the water.
