Though tamales can be eaten anytime of the year,
they are tradtionally made around Christmas and New Years
These pictures were all taken at Smiely and Movita Pedroza's house, Dec. 22, 2007
Our kids decided it was time they learn so the tradition carries on.

Daniel is mixing the masa while Movita is preparing the corn husk

Tamales can be made with a variety of fillings. Pork meat is
the traditional filling, beef and chicken are also used.
Smiley and Movita also make a veggie and cheese tamale.

Once the meat tamales are filled, they are put in the pot to steam
Then it is time to make the sweet tamales

The same basic masa is used. Sweet ingredients are added
that make this a great desert or breakfast tamale.

Renee went to observe and take pictures for a short while
and baby Eddie was at home with his daddy.

Making tamales is a work of heart. It takes time to make them
and time together is well worth the time put it.

I would like to experiment and try some turkey tamales with sweet potatoes.
