My Snowpatch Ornament
I have saved this snowpatch wrapping for several years thinking I would be making the angel on it some day. When Darylynn gave us an assignment to make a craft, I decided it was time to do this craft. I already had the material to do this.
When I do a craft, I usually get enough material to make several to give as gifts.
Step 1: Gather items needed. Material for body and wings and batting. Embroider thread and needle for stitching. Color will depend on what mateiral you choose for your body and wings. Orange paint for nose. Embellishments of your choice: scarf, buttons, bells, twigs or toothpicks for nose. Optional, Egg containers turned upside down to secure toothpicks while paint is drying. A half a small apple will work too.
Step 2: Cut out the material for snowman body and wings. I used pinking shears to cut out the wings since a running stich is used to bind the pieces. You can shape the wings however you want. You can even use something else for wings like lace.
Fold your mateiral in half and pin the pattern on. Cut around it, Next cut out your batting with the same patten. I used cotton batting for the inside. Insert the batting between the main material. If you are stitching the eyes and mouth, do it before you put the pieces together. It will work better if you stitch the top and middle together. Then add back and Blanket stitch the ends with 3 strands of embroidery floss. If you don't stitch face, you can use a Sharpee pen to save time. Practice on a spare piece of material to see how the sharpee blends into the fabric.
Step 3: Arms and nose. I went outside and found what I needed. I used the same thing for the nose. I dipped the toothpics in the orange paint until it covered about an inch of the toothpick. The tricky part is keeping the paint on. Dip the nose tips in paint and place the dry part in the egg crate or whaterver you have to alloow the paint to dry. If you do not have these things, be creative. You can use felt or twigs. If you are working with kid, use constrcution paper or felt.
Step 4: Slip the twigs in between the stiching. You can glue them in if you want them to be more secure. Then you can glue the the wings to the back. Here is a sample with light colored material for the wings. For the sake of time, I scanned these directly. Be careful because the twigs are delicate.
Step 5: The final touches. I decided I liked the darker wings with the stars.I moved the scarf over and added buttons. I used craft wire for the halo. If you don't want a halo, you can made a felt hat. You will want to add a piece of thread or ribbon to the back if you want to hang this on the tree. You can also tie it on a package. You could put a larger wooden heart and use a fine point Sharpee to add a name or year.I added a bell but could not scan with the bell. Again, be creative and have fun!
